Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) plans to open its first representative office in Japan aimed at coordinating and attracting Japanese investment.

The news emerged during a virtual discussion yesterday between Nguon Mengtech, director-general of the CCC and Susuma Tai, honorary consulate of Cambodia in Japan.

The discussion focused on procedures to establish a representative CCC office in Japan, the proposed list of members from Japan and Cambodia and the expediting of the establishment of the representative office of the CCC in Japan.

The talks were accelerated to open the first CCC office in Japan as soon as possible, said Meng Tech.

“In Japan, we don’t have any representative office so, once operational, the CCC’s representative office will play an important role in facilitating investment and businesses from Japan to Cambodia,” Meng Tech told Khmer Times.

There are many procedures to overcome to establish the office in Japan, he said, adding he hoped the first office will be open late this year or early next year.

“There have been many Japanese investors waiting to seek opportunities in Cambodia and they would come and explore in the post COVID-19 era,” he said.

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Japan reached $848 million in the first four months of

2021, an increase of 8.7 per cent compared with $780 million in the same period last year, according to data from state-run agency Japan External Trade Organization.

Cambodia exported $643 million of goods to Japan, inching up 2.2 percent compared with the same period last year.
