Cambodia will host the 10th Asia-European Editors’ Forum in October this year, with the top agenda focused mainly on fighting against fake news.

The forum will be held with the theme of strengthening cooperation between journalists in the fight against false information to jointly eliminate false information in society and preserve the value or profession of a journalist.

The forum will be held in line with the 13th Asia-European Summit to be hosted in October or November this year.

Meas Sophorn, spokesman for the Ministry of Information, said that the agenda on fighting against fake news was set following agreement from the member countries.

The 10th Editorial Forum in 2021 will be attended by well-known editors from 26 countries, including 13 from Asia and 13 from Europe, to discuss the elimination of false information in society, particularly in the social media and maintain the value or professionalism of journalists, he said.

“Editors will discuss all aspects of the global media situation to effectively combat false information,” Sophorn told Khmer Times on Monday.

“The organising of the editorial forum has three main purposes: First, to promote dialogue and build relations between the Association of Asian and European Journalists, second, to raise awareness of the progress of the Asia-Europe Summit among the editors-in-chief of Asia-Europe member countries; and third, to find trends in reporting on Asia-Europe relations and issued related to Asia-Europe cooperation,” he said.

The agenda is fixed to the situation in Cambodia as the Ministry of Information is working to enhance professional journalism.

From 2020 till March, at least seven media outlets, most of them online media, have their licences revoked over broadcasting fake news.
