Nine public toilet blocks are being constructed at strategic locations along the beaches in Sihanoukville as part of making the city more attractive to tourists.

Kheang Phearum, Preah Sihanouk provincial spokesman said yesterday the toilets are being built along O’chheuteal beach, Otres Beach and Chum Teav Mao Beach.

“With Preah Sihanouk province being one of the country’s most attractive tourist destinations, the building of the public toilets will be an added advantage. Furthermore, the use of these public toilets will be free-of-charge,” he added.

He said the public toilet facilities will be ready before Khmer New Year, which is in April, one of the longest holidays in Cambodia.

The public toilets are built with funds from the provincial hall and four firms have been given the contract to build them namely, Pishnuka, Heng Sambath, VT and an engineering team from the Ministry of Interior.

Currently, the building of the public toilets is 35 percent complete and the decision to build them was in line with the road construction in the coastal city.

The government injected nearly $300 million to build the infrastructure of 34 roads in Sihanoukville to help transform the face of this beach city with new infrastructure, commercial buildings and an attractive tourism sector.

Phearum said that the provincial hall is also planning to build more public infrastructures and facilities in the city to support the tourism sector and increase the beauty of the city.

“There are more to be built but we build depending on the availability of budget,” Phearum said.
