The Cambodian embassy in South Korea said the South Korean government now allows Cambodian migrant workers whose contracts have expired to apply for jobs in agriculture and fishery.

In its statement, the Cambodian embassy said workers in the industry could continue working in South Korea from one to three months in agriculture and fishery despite their expired contracts of three, four years and ten months.

Cambodian Ambassador to South Korea Long Dimanche said today about 4,000 out of 40,000 Cambodian migrant workers in South Korea have expired contracts.

The embassy said that the opportunity is open for workers whose contracts have expired and they worked in the industrial sector.

The workers could apply for jobs at Foreign Workers’ protection center, it said, adding those who worked illegally and those who worked in agriculture and construction would not be allowed to apply.

Last year, South Korea’s Labour Ministry rated Cambodian migrant workers as the best among their foreign counterparts in that country.

The Human Resources Development Service of Korea also highly rated the Kingdom’s ability to efficiently send its workers to South Korea compared with 15 other countries which provide migrant labor to the country.

The other countries include Vietnam, Thailand, Timor Leste, Myanmar, and Laos.
