The Siem Reap provincial health department has isolated a family who returned from the United Arab Emirates and ran away from a quarantine centre in Phnom Penh.

Four people from the family arrived in Cambodia on Saturday night and were placed at the Chak Angre Kroam quarantine centre in Phnom Penh, Ngy Meanheng, Phnom Penh municipal health department director, said yesterday.

He said they arrived at the quarantine centre at about 12 am but they complained about staying there because their home was in Siem Reap province. They agreed to stay after officials explained the situation.

“But at around 1 am they fled the centre while the staff were sleeping,” Mr Meanheng said. “We informed the relevant authorities and they were found in Siem Reap province.”

On Friday the Royal Embassy of Cambodia to Kuwait assisted in the repatriation of the Cambodian family who were stuck in the United Arab Emirates following travel restrictions imposed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

An embassy statement said the four Cambodian nationals had been stranded in the UAE since March 28.

The Cambodian ambassador to Kuwait led the repatriation efforts with the coordination of the South Korean embassies in Kuwait and the UAE and UAE flag carrier Etihad Airways.

Kros Sarath, Siem Reap provincial health department director, said today the fugitive family members were brought by police to be quarantined.

“They are now placed for 14-days quarantine at the provincial referral hospital,” he said, but declined to comment further.
