Samdech Techo Hun Sen Urges Border Residents to Shift from Thai Baht to Riel or US Dollar to Safeguard Against Potential Risks

Phnom Penh, October 6, 2025 — Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, today issued a public message calling on Cambodian people, particularly those living along the border with Thailand, to urgently exchange Thai baht for Cambodian riel or US dollars in order to prevent possible financial losses.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen warned that the Thai baht could potentially become a point of vulnerability, similar to other cases in the past where essential supplies such as electricity, internet, and fuel were leveraged as tools of pressure. He underlined that reducing dependence on the baht will help protect Cambodian citizens from future risks and ensure greater economic resilience.
He further stressed that increasing the use of the riel not only serves to protect people’s livelihoods but also strengthens Cambodia’s financial sovereignty. “Switching from the baht to the riel helps reinforce our nation’s independence and stability,” Samdech Techo affirmed.
The call comes as Cambodia continues its efforts to promote the national currency and safeguard its economic security, especially in sensitive border regions.
