Cambodia Friday sought Azerbaijan’s assistance in investment, particularly in the processing industry, energy, agriculture, and healthcare sectors.

The proposal was made during a meeting between Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly (NA) and Shovgi Mechdizade, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Cambodia.

Sudary urged Ambassador Mechdizade to assist in attracting investors to Cambodia in the processing industry, energy, agriculture, and healthcare sectors, which are key growth areas both regionally and globally.”

She said that Cambodia is gaining attention and attracting numerous investors in these industries due to favourable export tax policies and the strategic location of its ports, which facilitate the smooth movement of goods by water, according to an NA statement.

Sudary highlighted that both countries still have significant potential to promote and increase investment including opportunities in the export of agricultural products from Cambodia such as rice, pepper, mangoes, and cashew nuts, as well as in the healthcare sector.

“The strong relations between Cambodia and Azerbaijan are truly important not only in strengthening and expanding bilateral ties, friendship, and cooperation between our two countries, which have lasted for 30 years, but also in contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and the world,” she added.

Ambassador Mechdizade expressed his gratitude to the National Assembly Speaker’s willingness to meet and engage in discussions with him. He also acknowledged that she, along with the entire National Assembly, has fostered strong cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Cambodia, despite the embassy being located in Hanoi, Vietnam.

He added that the NA has played a key role in promoting the development and strengthening of cooperative relations between the two countries, both in the legislative and executive branches.

Ambassador Mechdizade also appreciated the progress across all sectors in Cambodia under the leadership of the 7th Royal Government, headed by Prime Minister Hun Manet, who continues the mission of Mr Hun Sen.

“He would make every effort to promote stronger and more prosperous relations between the two countries, including a commitment to attract more Azerbaijani investors to Cambodia,” said Ambassador Mechdizade, the NA statement quoted him saying.

Keo Piseth, Chief of the National Assembly Secretariat and also a Spokesman for NA President, during a press conference, said, “NA President highly appreciated the implementation of the (2022) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). However, she emphasised that the two countries should work to further strengthen the relations and contribute to the Royal Government’s efforts in advancing both bilateral ties and people-to-people connections.”

He said in 2022, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan and Cambodia signed an MoU and since then there has been mutual support and a continued exchange of visits between the two parliaments.

He went on to add that Sudary also highlighted the importance of promoting the development of the economy, health and agriculture sectors, such as facilitating the export of Cambodian agricultural products to Azerbaijan, as well as imports from Azerbaijan to Cambodia. “This drive is to make the economy grow and be sustainable because peace and economy are closely linked,” Piseth added.
