The Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of India are satisfied with the progress of their bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their joint commitment to working more closely to further strengthen and deepen the relations in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks for their mutual benefits and for peace, stability and prosperity in the region, especially during Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022.

The commitment was made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Prak Sokhonn, and the Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in their telephone conversation on January 10.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation AKP received last night, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of India in 2022, the two Foreign Ministers agreed to exchange visits and jointly organise meaningful events in their respective country. DPM Sokhonn stated that Dr Subrahmanyam visits to Cambodia will be a good opportunity for him to co-chair the Third Meeting of the Cambodia-India Joint Commission to be held in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The two Foreign Ministers also expressed their delight with the progress of cooperation within the frameworks of the ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations and Mekong-Ganga Cooperation. the Deputy Prime Minister expressed high appreciation to India for her active contribution to the Mekong region and assistance extended to Cambodia through Quick Impact Projects under Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Initiative in the field of agriculture, environment, health, rural development, education and culture.

The two Foreign Ministers also exchanged views on the recent developments in Myanmar and shared the view that ASEAN plays a crucial role to assist Myanmar in finding peaceful solution to the crisis through the effective implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. DPM Sokhonn briefed the Minister of External Affairs of India the positive outcomes of the working visit of Prime Minister Hun Sen to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on January 7 to January 8, it pointed out.

Dr Subrahmanyam mentioned that as a neighbouring country to Myanmar, India is monitoring the situation in the country closely, and highly valued the important role played by Cambodia as the Chair of ASEAN this year. AKP-Phal Sophanith/Khmer Times
