The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has identified Cambodia as the fourth largest cassava grower in Asia and the 10th largest in the world.

Growing, harvesting, processing and exporting cassava is a key to increasing employment and maintaining the livelihoods of thousands of families, and it is also a major source of income for farmers.

In a recent UNDP statement, Nick Beresford, UNDP Resident Representative in Cambodia, said: “Cassava offers many opportunities for Cambodia, especially if it can step into the regional value chain through exports such as processed products like cassava flour.

“It requires contract farming between processing plants and cassava farmers to create a quality and stable supply.”

The National Policy on Cassava was prepared by the Government Cassava Working Group and approved by the Royal Government of Cambodia on August 14, 2020. This important national policy will be implemented until 2025 with the goal of developing production and expanding the export of processed cassava products from Cambodia.

Pan Sorassak, Minister of Commerce, said, “Cassava is a key crop for Cambodia’s socio-economic development. Take advantage of new marketing opportunities. “This policy will make cassava an important crop in promoting the development of agro-industry in Cambodia and help expand the economic base to contribute to the achievement of the development goals of the Royal Government of Cambodia in 2030 and 2050.”

“Cassava is an industrial crop that grows up to 12 million tonnes per year and has the potential to improve farmers’ livelihoods and improve the quality of life of farmers. Khmer Times
