The Ministry of Public Works is in talks with the developer of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway, the country’s first-ever high-speed road, to give a month free of paying the toll for Cambodian people once it opens.

Minister of Public Works Sun Chanthol made the comment during an inspection visit to construction sites of the expressway on Monday.

The highway construction is 55 percent completed, he said, adding that the quality of construction is good following the contracted agreement.

“The ministry asked the Chinese firm to consider allowing a toll-free month for Cambodians travelling on the expressway once it is put into operation,” Chanthol said, adding that he also asked to set prices below the standard price compared to other countries in the region.

The project was started in March 2019 and is built by China Road and Bridge Corp technically supervised by Guangzhou Wanan Construction Supervision Co Ltd at a cost of $2 billion.
