The number of both registered fixed and mobile internet subscribers in Cambodia has seen remarkable increase last year thanks to the high demand of internet in the COVID-19 context, while the number of SIM card subscribers is reportedly decreasing.

According to H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, there were more than 16 million internet subscribers in 2020, up about 40 percent compared to a year earlier.

“The number of mobile internet subscribers was about 16 million and, with fixed internet subscribers, the number is close to 17 million,” said H.E. Minister.

H.E. Chea Vandeth attributed the growth mainly to the development of telecommunication infrastructure and to pandemic as more people have turned to online study and working.

For registered SIM card subscribers, he said, there were about 20 million, sliding down from the previously year due to unregistered SIM card removal campaign.

Currently, there are five mobile service providers in Cambodia – Smart, Cellcard, Viettel, Cootel, SeaTel – five mobile internet providers, and 42 fixed internet providers.

As of May, Cambodia has about 10.9 million Facebook users, pointed out the ministry’s report. AKP
