Cambodian Diplomat: Women Have The Power To Change And Promote Positive Development
Deputy Prime Minister H.E Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia stated that women and girls have the power to change and promote positive development. According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the foreign minister was speaking at the opening of the International Conference on “Strengthening the Role of Women in Building and Maintaining Peace: From Commitment to Outcome” via Video Conference Monday this week.
He said that from the tragic past, Cambodia has seen the energy and resilience of women in rebuilding society, as well as creating an atmosphere of peace and security that is important for the economic and social development of the country. Therefore, on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, he welcomed the UN Resolution on Women, Peace and Security in Peace building and Peacekeeping, as well as the UN Secretary-General’s Seven Action Plans on Peace building and respond to gender.
H.E Prak Sokhonn added that gender equality is one of the core values supported by the Royal Government of Cambodia and is integrated into national development strategy and policy at all levels. Thanks to the efforts of the Royal Government of Cambodia, women now accounted for 41% of all civil servants by 2020, and this figure is growing in leadership and decision-making positions.
He added that women’s participation in peacekeeping is another corner of Cambodia’s commitment to promoting women’s empowerment by enhancing the role of women in building a peaceful world.
“Since 2006, Cambodia has sent 419 out of a total of 7,123 women peacekeepers to UN peacekeeping missions in nine countries. This year, 92 of the 781 Cambodian peacekeepers are on peacekeeping missions in five countries.
H.E Minister reiterated Cambodia’s continued commitment to increasing recruitment of women, to creating a conducive environment for women to reach their full potential and expand their participation in the sustainable development and peace-building process around the world. AKP
