Siem Reap Provincial Chief Monk and head of the Monastery’s Affairs Council, Kimrong Kimleng has called on concerned parties to cancel the construction of a temple located at Angkor Thom.

Kimleng insisted that the pagoda committee comply with the regulations imposed by the APSARA Authority and undergo an evaluation prior to the construction of any infrastructure as part of sustaining the authenticity of the major site that exemplifies cultural, religious and symbolic values, as well as containing high architectural, archaeological and artistic significance.

Angkor has blended natural relationship to its environment with the presence of large trees within the monument sites, representing a significant aspect of the historical development of the place.

Likewise, the rebirth of religious activities within the old temple complexes and the presence of farming communities have enhanced the historic city and contributed greatly to the unique ambiance experienced by visitors to Angkor.

He also said that the vast number of buildings around the area would affect the sole purpose of restoring the Kingdom’s symbolic legacy and the committee must follow certain procedures.

He also inspected the construction of a bookstore within the premise of the pagoda, made with a brick wall after gaining permission from the APSARA Authority.

Siem Reap provincial governor immediately ordered that all monasteries within the Angkor Park Protected Area are prohibited from building any infrastructures without permission from the APSARA Authority in accordance with the governing laws of protecting and preserving the historical value of the said site.
