PM Hun Sen: No hidden COVID-19 cases in Cambodia

Prime Minister Hun Sen today challenged ill-intentioned individuals to take an oath before accusing the government of hiding the number of people infected with COVID-19 in the Kingdom.

Speaking at the annual celebration of the River Festival held in Battambang province this year, the premier said he had been apprised of claims posted on social media accusing the government of manipulating coronavirus figures in an attempt to give the public a false sense of security.

“Cambodia is now working closely with relevant partners, especially the WHO. There is no reason to hide information about patients who tested positive for the virus. If we, by any chance, hide it, it would still be pointless as those infected will still make it known to the public,” he said.

“Do you dare swear by your words in front of Hun Sen [me]? Swear on your life that you’re telling the truth about the government hiding information,” Mr Hun Sen said. “Our country may be poor but we are rich by heart. I want to make this clear.”

Addressing the public, he said: “Those who suspect themselves of being infected with the virus, please contact our health officials.”

Mr Hun Sen said as of today, a total of 145 countries have reported cases of COVID-19 infection, adding that the situation in China is finally under control.

“I would like to congratulate the Chinese government for their efforts in combating the pandemic. As of yesterday, there has been no reported deaths in China. Italy, however, has reported more than 200 deaths in a day,” he said before noting that China can now “help other countries to treat their patients.”

At present, the Kingdom has reported seven cases of COVID-19.
