1,000 trees planted for a greener Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh Municipal authorities yesterday planted nearly 1,000 luxury tree saplings along the National Road 6A from the Prum Muk Buon roundabout to the Varin pagoda in Chroy Changvar district’s Prek Leap commune. The green initiative is part of the year-long celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the US and Cambodia diplomatic ties.
The tree-planting ceremony was attended by deputy governor Nuon Pharoth, the US embassy’s deputy chief of mission Michael Newbill, Forestry Administration officials, and other relevant authorities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Pharoth said the activity seeks to expand green cover in Phnom Penh as part of the smart city development plan.
“The Phnom Penh capital is being prepared to attain the smart city status. We already have plans to develop the capital for 2015-2035. This tree-planting activity is but a small step among the long-term steps to make Phnom Penh more beautiful and sustainable,” he said.
Kom Seyha, chief of the Phnom Penh Forestry Administration, said 886 luxury trees were planted along National Road 6A – all of which were received from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Mr. Newbill said the tree-planting initiative sought to honor the 70th Anniversary of US-Cambodia diplomatic ties, as well as celebrate April as the Environment Month.
“As the trees grow, they will add to the beauty of Phnom Penh and play an important role in providing clean air to this growing city,” he said. “The US embassy recognizes Cambodia as an important partner. As such, we continue to identify ways by which we can assist Cambodia to develop sustainably, reduce pollution and threats to its environment and protect its natural places for the next generation.” Khmer Times
