Cambodia Establishes Coordination Task Force with ASEAN Observers to Uphold Ceasefire Commitment
Phnom Penh, August 2, 2025 – In a press briefing held at the Office of the Council of Ministers on Saturday morning, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, announced that the Royal Government of Cambodia has officially established a coordination task force to work closely with international observers, underscoring its firm commitment to the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, 2025.
“The decision made on August 1, 2025 to form a coordination task force with the observer group reflects Cambodia’s genuine political will to implement the ceasefire in good faith,” Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata stated.
She emphasized, “This formation clearly demonstrates the Cambodian Government’s readiness and resolute intention to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.”
According to Lt. Gen. Socheata, the newly formed coordination team will be led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, General TEA Seiha, as Chair. Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. KONG Phoak, and Secretary of State of the Ministry of National Defense, H.E. Rath Dararoth, have been appointed as Deputy Chairs. The team also includes several high-ranking officials from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), the National Police, and senior military officers from the Ministry of National Defense and the RCAF High Command.
According to an official post on the Ministry of National Defense’s social media channel on the evening of August 1, 2025, three ASEAN observer countries—Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines—have deployed their delegations to inspect areas affected by recent armed clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces.
During their field mission, the observers visited Military Region 4, where they met with Lieutenant General Pov Heng, Commander of the region. The delegation received a full briefing on the situation and were informed of the outcomes of the prior meeting held on July 29, 2025 between Cambodian Military Region 4 and Thailand’s Military Region 2 commanders.
This initiative reflects Cambodia’s continued transparency, regional cooperation, and peaceful engagement in addressing border tensions and promoting stability in the region.
