Lao President Urges Cambodia and Thailand to Exercise Restraint and Fully Implement Ceasefire on Border Dispute

China, September 1, 2025 – Lao President H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith has called on Cambodia and Thailand to maintain the highest level of restraint over their ongoing border dispute and to fully implement the agreed ceasefire in order to prevent further conflict between the two neighboring countries.
According to a press release on the outcomes of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in the People’s Republic of China, both Cambodian and Lao leaders expressed satisfaction and highly valued the steady progress of bilateral relations and cooperation across all sectors. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their comprehensive and long-term strategic partnership.
The leaders reiterated their resolve to uphold traditional ties of friendship while further enhancing and expanding Cambodia–Lao cooperation in key areas, including the economy, trade, connectivity, infrastructure, defense and security, as well as energy.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet briefed the Lao President on the current situation regarding the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute and the implementation of the ceasefire agreement. In response, President Thongloun encouraged both Cambodia and Thailand to remain patient, exercise the utmost restraint, and ensure the full enforcement of the ceasefire to avoid any escalation of conflict.
