Indian province selects Cambodia as education tourism destination
The Indian province of Himachal Pradesh has selected Cambodia as a destination for education tourism for 50 meritorious government school students.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu yesterday flagged off the students for the one-week plus academic tour to the Kingdom from his official residence. He also distributed tablets and travel kits to students before their departure, Press Trust of India reported.
“Children are the future of the country. Their dreams, education and knowledge would contribute to making India a strong and developed nation. This journey was not just a tour but a valuable opportunity to learn and develop a broader global perspective,” the Chief Minister said on the occasion.
According to the provincial government, the trip aims to offer the students a rich experience in terms of exploring historical and cultural sites.
Cambodian and Indian governments have been implementing many schemes and initiatives to boost tourism ties between the two nations.
In 2024, Cambodia received 6.7 million international tourists, an increase of 22.9 percent from the previous year. Of which, some 50,000 tourists were Indian tourists, an increase of 15.2 percent, a report by the Tourism Ministry report showed.
The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Cambodia, hosted the ‘Cambodia-India Tourism Forum 2024’ in Siem Reap province last October, aiming to promote tourism and cultural exchange between Cambodia and India and to attract more Indian investors to invest in Cambodia’s tourism industry.
Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, viewed the forum as a crucial event as Cambodia’s tourism sector is closely linked to India, which includes both Indian tourism and investment flows.
In 2023, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) unveiled a tourism package featuring Cambodia’s prime tourism destination Angkor Wat.
The package launched by the Lucknow wing of IRCTC consisted of eight nights and nine days and covered many places of importance from Ayodhya in India to Angkor Wat along with Vietnam.
The trip covered Siem Reap, Angkor Wat Temple, Kompong Phluk floating village in Hanoi, Ngoc Son Temple, Hoan Kiem Lake, Tran Quoc Pagoda and West Lake-Ba Dinh Square, Dong Xuan market, Hang Gai Shopping Street at Ha Long Bay Vietnam, cruise stay, kayaking and dinner on board at Da Nang Vietnam, Bana Hills and Golden Bridge.
India’s leading low-cost carrier IndiGo is set to announce a direct flight from Kolkata to Siem Reap, either this month or March 2025. The airline said the flight to Siem Reap province would start sometime in February or March, The Times of India, reported on January 27, quoting sources from the airline.
Last year, Cambodian airline Air Cambodia (K6) started operating direct flights to New Delhi.
