The daughters of former opposition leader Kem Sokha have launched a withering attack on his former CNRP partner Sam Rainsy – describing him as ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ and ‘deceitful.’

In a post on Twitter, Monovithya Kem, Deputy Director-General of Public Affairs at the Cambodia National Rescue Party, exposed the fault lines between the ex leaders of the CNRP – which was formed in 2012 after a merger between Sokha’s Human Rights Party and the Sam Rainsy Party and was dissolved by court order in 2017.

Responding to claims that Sam Rainsy was using Kem Sokha’s name to direct supporters to the Candlelight Party, Ms Kem tweeted:

‘My father Kem Sokha is entitled to his opinion to call his deceitful partner to stop exploiting him & deceiving the public. The partnership was effectively over when his partner called on the party/people in Cambodia to abandon him when he’s imprisoned & led a deceitful campaign’

Meanwhile, her sister Samathida Kem continued the attack, saying

‘Ever since the arrest of my father, Sam Rainsy’s closest allies launched constant smear campaigns against him and our family on Khmer social media. We were never allow to defend ourselves for the so-called “unity.”

If your cause involves abusing your partner and silencing those defending themselves, then you’re not fighting 4 democracy. You’re fighting for your preferred dictatorship. I will no longer accept any misinformation spread through mouthpieces & uninformed & biased outlets.

My family put up with Rainsy’s smears for decades, from racist false claim that we were Vietnamese to sexist attacks on my sister following my father’s arrest. Any self-proclaimed anti-racist and feminist who defends Rainsy should be known as the hypocritical fool they are.

To the unethical journalist who wrote that my father told his party to not use his name, the Candle Light Party is NOT his party. Sam Rainsy # his party. Rainsy is a person.’

On November 28, 2021, Kem Sokha declared that he and Sam Rainsy were ‘not the same person’ and warned Sam Rainsy, to stop using his image and name to serve his political ambitions, confusing national and international public opinion.

In his message to Sam Rainsy, Kem Sokha stated: “Mr. Sam Rainsy and his colleagues walked away from the original principles and spirit of unity to create various political movements and positions themselves, in particular. More recently, they have returned to open support or behind the leadership of their old political party, the Candlelight Party. ”

Mr. Kem Sokha continued: “Their actions prove that Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha are not one person, because all these activities do not have my support or position. Therefore, I call on Mr. Sam Rainsy and the above group to stop abusing me by using my name and photo in connection with their political ambitions, which confuse the national and international public .’ Khmer Times
