Cambodia is experiencing both moderate and heavy rainfall due to La Nina and El Nino phenomena, according to the Ministry of Water Resources and meteorology.

In its statement issued today, the ministry said, “The general weather conditions are affected by El Niño-Southern Oscillation Forecast which shows from May to October 2021 that there is 60 percent of Neutral phenomena, 30 percent of La Nina phenomena, and 10 percent of EI Nino phenomena.”

“This will have both moderate and heavy rainfall in Mekong Basin and across the country,” it said.

It said that the water level of Mekong River in Stung Treng province is 0.33 metres higher than the average in the previous year. The water level in Mekong River in Kratie province is 0.50 metres higher than the previous year’s average.

From January to March, the water level of Mekong River in Kampong Cham is 1.20 metres lower than the previous year’s average, but in April it was about 0.32 metres higher than the previous year’s average, it said.

The water level of Bassac river at Chaktomuk in Phnom Penh from January to March is 1.04 metres lower than the previous year’s average, but it is similar to an average in April compared to Tonle Sap lake. It is about 0.18 to 1.36 metres lower than the previous year’s average.

Earlier this year, the water level of Mekong River is higher than the previous year’s average, while the water level in Tonle Sap lake is lower than the previous year’s average.
