EVA Air is set to resume its flight service between Taipei and Phnom Penh beginning on Friday, according to Director of Communications and PR for Cambodia Airports Khek Norinda.

He added the carrier then plans to provide twice weekly service on Wednesdays and Fridays starting on March 15. Norinda stated that the restart is the result of the lifting of measures curbing passenger transit through Taipei’s Taoyuan airport.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) lifted its ban on international passengers transiting via Taiwan Taoyuan Airport on March 1.

According to the statement, passengers should travel on flights conducted within the same airline group. Connecting flights should be made within eight hours of arrival and passengers will be observed by designated ground staff while having meals and shopping at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport.

Passengers are required to provide a COVID-19 RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) test report issued within three days before their scheduled flight. time in order to board flights to Taiwan.

Norinda said that scheduled international flights currently operate between a handful of Chinese cities, Singapore and Seoul and that domestic flights between Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville are happening at a low frequency.

Local carriers currently operating flights include Lanmei Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Airways and JC airlines. Non-domestic carriers include Spring Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, SilkAir, Jetstar, Korean and Air Asiana Airlines.

In the first two weeks of February, 223 inbound and outbound scheduled flights took place at Cambodia’s three international airports, according to Cambodia Airports. Air traffic in January and February has continued its trend downward compared with the same period in 2020. That drop totals 94 percent.

According to Norinda, 13 in-and-out daily flights on average take place at the country’s three international airports, with most of them concentrated in Phnom Penh. He added that the Siem Reap airport handles only one or two domestic flights per week. At the Sihanoukville airport, there were 10 domestic flights operating and four international flights from/to Guangzhou.

“Regarding Phnom Penh, in-and-out daily scheduled flights total 29 on average. International routes include Singapore and Seoul as well as Guangzhou, Shenzen, Kunming, Shanghai, Beijing, Xiamen and Chengdu in China. Fewer than 900 inbound and outbound flights were recorded at the three international airports for the month of January this year, a drop of more than 91 percent compared with January 2020, said Norinda.
