European Chamber of Commerce event to focus on climate goals

The European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) will be hosting a breakfast talk tomorrow at Hotel Cambodiana in Phnom Penh on how European brands can meet RE100 and other global climate goals in Cambodia.

RE100 is a global initiative of more than 260 influential corporations committed to using only 100 percent renewable energy in their operations. The event has been organised by The Climate Group and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system used by investors, companies, cities, states and regions to help manage their environmental impacts.

The event will bring together different brands in Cambodia adhering to RE100 practices and similar targets to address common challenges, practicalities and opportunities in meeting global climate goals in Cambodia.

RE100 companies make a commitment to go “100 percent renewable” and set a public goal to procure 100 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by a specified year, but their strategies vary in how they plan to reach their targets.

As consumers increasingly demand environmentally-friendly initiatives, many European companies have implemented climate change and renewable energy targets, such as RE100.

These targets flow down corporate supply chains, placing the source of electricity for factories in countries such as Cambodia under scrutiny and pressure to adapt.

The recent approval of large coal projects to supply Cambodia’s electricity has added significant carbonisation to the electricity grid, making it harder for these brands to meet their renewable energy and carbon targets. The Kingdom’s neighbour countries are offering more attractive options in meeting those goals, including Feed in Tarrifs (a feed-in tariff is a policy designed to support the development of renewable energy sources by providing a guaranteed, above-market price for producers), rooftop solar support and direct corporate agreements.

Registration for the event begins at 7:30am tomorrow at the venue. The breakfast is scheduled from 8am to 10am. Ticket prices are $20 for EuroCham members and $30 for non-members. Khmer Times
