After new recruitment was suspended amid the pandemic this year, the government has announced it plans to recruit some 6,106 civil servants next year.

Minister of Civil Service Prum Sokha signed an official letter released on November 4 and obtained by Khmer Times yesterday which informed state institutions and ministries of the new recruitment drive.

The letter said: “The government will authorise the recruitment of 6,106 new civil servants in 2021. A total 22 ministries and institutions will be able to recruit new civil servants, with the most positions being available for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.”

The Ministry of Education will be allowed to recruit a total of 3,600 new civil servants in 2021, the Ministry of Health will be allowed to recruit 1,300 new civil servants, the Ministry of Justice 178 new civil servants, the Ministry of Interior 170 civil servants, the Ministry of National Assembly Senate Relations and Inspection five civil servants and the Ministry of Civil Service and Ministry of Mines and Energy will be allowed to recruit eight respectively, it added.

The ministries and institutions not allowed to recruit new civil servants in 2021 are the Royal Academy of Cambodia, the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the National Committee for Combating Terrorism and the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Planning, Rural Development, Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, Cult and Religion, Land Management and Urban Planning and Construction.

Regarding the government’s new civil servant recruitment plan for next year, spokesman of the Ministry of Education Ros Soveacha said that he has no clear information on this yet, but will disclose the information at the appropriate time.

Director general of the International Relations Institute of the Royal Academy of Cambodia Kin Phea said that although the IRIC needs to employ new scholars as civil servants for research, he respects the decision of the government owing to the pandemic.

Due to COVID 19, the government decided to suspend the recruitment of new civil servants in 2020 to reduce the state expenditure.

Cambodia, currently has 218,635 civil servants, of which 41 percent are women. Khmer Times
