Leading women in tech recognised

Five women were hailed at this year’s Cambodia Women in Tech Award for their contributions to the country’s entrepreneurship and technology industry. The award-giving body, which falls under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, seeks to encourage women to play an active and prominent role in the digital and technology sectors.
Held Thursday last week, the awards were presented to Kong Sorita, Prum Sophea, Pen Vorneat, Rithy Lomorpich, and Ses Vonsa.
Sorita, director of Ocean Technology Co Ltd, is a young and successful entrepreneur who previously won awards both in the local and international stage. She is also an economic advisor to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and holds workshops that shape young women into becoming leaders in the industry.
Her lectures and advocacy are encapsulated in her self-published books titled “Leading Ladies” and “Dare to Dream”.
The second recipient, Sophea, is the chief product officer of Soramitsu Khmer Co Ltd and the first Cambodian woman to receive a Ph.D. in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, which she attained in 2013 from France’s University of La Rochelle.
With over a decade of experience in AI research under her belt, Sophea has contributed a significant volume of tech information for students and other researchers.
Meanwhile, Vorneat, besides being the director of 606 Co Ltd and a professional computer programmer, is also an active contributor to tech education. At present, Vorneat works with a group of young people in managing a local online campaign called “Digital Noodle” to raise public awareness on emerging digital trends.
Fourth is Plerng Kob company co-founder Lomorpich, a well-known producer and director of local series and documentaries such as Love9, Shadow of the Shadow, and Bon Phum.
Lastly, Vonsa was recognized for creating the Solar Pi project which teaches rural and remote students about coding and 3D design.
“[Our recognition] shows that women can also dominate the IT sector. It is not only the men who have a voice in the industry but women as well,” said Lomorpich after receiving the award.
Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth said the awards are given annually to support and further encourage successful women to keep pursuing their careers in the field of technology.
“These awards will encourage new digital businesses in Cambodia to expand into the regional and international arena, as well as show Cambodia’s potential in the tech field,” he said. Khmer Times
