U.S. expresses support for DC-Cam’s documentation process
The United States of America has confirmed its support for Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam) in archiving what had happened to broaden the people’s understanding.
The remark was made by W. Patrick Murphy, U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, during his visit to the Anlong Veng Peace Centre located in Trapaing Prey commune, Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province Monday.
The U.S.’ assistance to DC-Cambodia has been made through programmes of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), he added.
“Moving visit to former conflict sites in Anlong Veng, now home to dialogue & reconciliation efforts, including the Peace Centre & museum – important for healing & awareness. Thanks to the Documentation Centre of Cambodia,” Ambassador Murphy said.
Mr. Ly Sok-Kheang, Director of Anlong Veng Peace Centre, said that the centre has started its work with Anlong Veng community in 2001 and its first work was to conduct research and compile two documents related to Anlong Veng historical site, including ‘History of the Anlong Veng Community: The Final Stronghold of the Khmer Rouge Movement’ and ‘Anlong Veng Guidebook for Tour Guides’.
The research and compilation process has been supported by the U.S. government through USAID, he pointed out.
Mr. Chhang Youk, Executive Director of DC-Cam, applauded the establishment of Anglong Veng Peace Centre, stressing that it is a step forward towards its mutually reinforcing aims of peace, education, and sustainable tourism.
According to DC-Cam, the Anlong Veng Peace Centre is dedicated to memory, reconciliation, and peace building, and it achieves these objectives through peace studies and genocide education. The Centre not only aims to provide a critical understanding of Cambodia’s violent history, but it also seeks to convey a basic understanding of different theories on conflict resolution and transformation.
