Advisors, assistants, secretaries and other officials with equivalent positions at four ministries will lose their positions, according to a sub-decree obtained by Khmer Times today.

The sub-decree, dated June 10 and signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen, said the ministries involved are the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Cults and Religions, Ministry of Civil Service, and Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

“[The sub-decree] ends the position of advisors, assistants, secretaries and other officials with equivalent position… who were appointed by a sub-decree issued before March 30, 2020,” it said.

Prum Sokha, the Minister of Civil Service, said today the move is a part of an administrative process and has nothing to do with the government’s effort to cut its spending, as speculated by some people.

“When new ministers are appointed, the officials in advisory and assisting roles have to be replaced with the new ones,” he said. “This is in accordance with the laws, and there is nothing unusual about it.”

When asked about the number of advisors currently employed by the government, he said he had no idea but believed that each minister has “at least 30”.
