The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has advised vehicle owners to ensure that the licence plates they use are issued by the authorities and not fakes in order to avoid legal action.

Vasim Sorya, a ministry spokesman, said today all licence plates must conform to the set format in accordance with the sub-decree on the registration of vehicle identification cards and licence plates and are issued by ministry.

He said vehicles with other types of number plates will not be allowed on public roads.

“All licence plates issued by the Ministry, including regular licence plates, special plates or personalized one, carry QR codes issued by the ministry,” he said. “In order to get a licence plate, vehicle owners have to apply for one by providing a vehicle technical inspection certificate and tax document. They cannot simply create one on their own.

Mr Sorya urged all vehicle owners to abide by the Road Traffic Law and sub-decrees, and provide relevant documents to prove their licence plates are legal in order to avoid fines and legal action.

The ministry’s advice was made after the Battambang provincial department of public works and transport officials, in cooperation with provincial police, found a car belonging to the Wat Mlop Por Prek pagoda which used a number plate written with Khmer words that read “Battambang Wat Mlop Por Prek”.
