Huawei Cambodia commits to enhancing Kingdom’s digital landscape

In the latest Khmer Times Cross-talk interview, Editor-in-Chief Kimsong Kay welcomes the guest, Yao Yuya, chief executive officer of the renowned Huawei Technologies (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. During the episode, Mr. Yao discusses Huawei Cambodia’s commitment to improving the digital landscape in the Kingdom and the remarkable performance of the Chinese firm for over 21 years since its entry into the local market.

As Mr. Yao explains in the live interview (which is available for streaming on Khmer Times’ official Facebook page), Huawei Cambodia was built on the vision of boosting the reach of information and communication technology infrastructure and systems and smart devices across numerous countries. Working on this goal, Huawei Cambodia established in Cambodia in 1999.

The collaboration between the leading global provider and Cambodia paid off, with Huawei Cambodia continuing to expand its “In Cambodia for Cambodia” project to provide every home and organization much-needed access to digital technologies.

The CEO explains that providing the latest technologies to the public will greatly benefit livelihoods while creating further opportunities for Cambodians entering or surveilling the job market – something which he says remains a priority.

“I believe Cambodia will continue to seek business growth and the industry needs competent employees to fulfill the demand,” says Mr. Yao.

With the government expecting to see a growth in job hunters, Huawei Cambodia this year swiftly responded. In the first half of the year, 21 graduates were employed by the company in a bid to expand its local capacities. Indeed, the Chinese firm is staunch in training ICT talents, particularly fresh graduates who show the great potential of being reliable technicians in the future.

Despite being a global leader in ICT, Mr. Yao admits that the unprecedented emergence of the COVID-19 has not spared Huawei Cambodia. As many companies struggle to recover their financial losses, he says Huawei Cambodia likewise faced pandemic-induced impacts, which have affected its logistics and project implementation.

One of the major challenges encountered by the company was meeting the new demand for innovative technologies, such as video conferencing systems, in a short amount of time.

The rising demand in ICT, says Mr Yao, is due to the increase in employees setting up for remote work, students partaking in online classes and others – with the likes of government officials, business owners and health personnel – establishing channels to communicate necessary information during these critical times. With the enhanced and reliable capacities of the company, Mr. Yao says Huawei Cambodia has successfully responded to such demands.

On a positive note, he acknowledges the support the firm has received from the government and its customers who exhibited a strong willingness to give the firm a leg up by meeting it halfway. In addition, the company has remarkably managed to keep its entire workforce without having to make any salary cuts.

Conducting a bed test for 5G in Cambodia, Mr. Yao reiterates that further technological development will bring along many changes to livelihoods and society in general.

“The 5G test results were incredibly positive in Cambodia. We hope, as soon as possible, to be able to provide this tool to the country,” he says.

Recently, leading telecommunications operators in Cambodia implemented 5G trials with Huawei Cambodia BEST Network solution as they acknowledged the importance of high-speed internet. The 5G is touted to be 20 times faster than its precursor, 4G.

Furthermore, operators are exploring new ventures to offer services and applications such as gaming and AR/VR technology which saw a peak in demand.

For Mr. Yao, the next step would be to work together with authorities in order to provide access to technology to remote locations in the country, most especially schools and hospitals which are in most need of such innovations.

With the joint collaboration of Huawei Cambodia and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the project, “5G seeds for the future”, seeks to give full attention to training young talents. This initiative, says Mr. Yao, strongly underscores Huawei Cambodia’s focused commitment to providing optimal 5G services to the Cambodian people.

Upcoming collaborations will be extended as Huawei Cambodia and relevant ministries discuss the National Framework, Industry Policies and Digital Infrastructures. Huawei Cambodia, says Mr. Yao expects to see more pragmatic cooperation on the digital sector with the support of the government.

The firm’s established presence in over 170 countries and regions brings substantial expertise in ICT, along with the latest technologies and solutions. In 2019, Huawei Group has accumulated a total of $120 billion in revenue along with a 13.1 percent growth rate according to its financial reports.

The company provides four types of services, operating in telecommunications network infrastructure, digitalizing governmental departments and industries, offering consumer-based products and lastly, advancing a CLOUD service system at affordable costs.
