Cambodia urges IOT to investigate Thai ceasefire violation
Phnom Penh, September 27, 2025 – The Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia has voiced serious concern over rising tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, following what it described as deliberate provocations and continued firing from within the Thai side.
According to the Ministry’s statement, at 11:52 AM on September 27, 2025, Thai military forces launched an attack on Cambodian positions before accusing Cambodia of opening fire first. The Ministry stressed that such actions not only undermine respect for the ceasefire agreement but also risk escalating tensions further.
Cambodia has formally requested the ASEAN Interim Observers Team (IOT) to conduct a forensic investigation into the incident, focusing on the types of ammunition used and the direction of fire. The Ministry emphasized that these findings must be accurate, transparent, and accountable, ensuring fairness and justice for both sides. Cambodia also called on Thailand to demonstrate the same level of cooperation in allowing such verification.
The statement further recalled that during the first special meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on September 10, 2025, both countries agreed in principle on the Terms of Reference (TOR). In this regard, Cambodia urged the swift establishment of the ASEAN Observers Team (AOT) to independently verify compliance with the ceasefire—not merely in words, but through concrete actions.
Reaffirming its stance, the Cambodian armed forces declared their unwavering commitment to fully respecting and implementing the ceasefire agreement, while continuing to work closely at all levels with Thailand to promote peace, stability, and a swift return to normalcy along the border.
