Phnom Penh, 23 September 2025 — Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering position regarding the closure of the Cambodia-Thailand border, stressing that the responsibility for reopening lies solely with Thailand.

In his public remarks, Samdech Techo Hun Sen clarified that Cambodia has never requested the reopening of the checkpoint since its unilateral closure by the Thai military. “As Thailand closed the border, it is their decision to reopen it. Once Thailand reopens its side, Cambodia will follow within five hours,” he stated firmly.

Samdech Techo underlined that Cambodia will not compromise its dignity by appealing to Thailand. “Even if Thailand decides to keep the border closed for another 100 years, Cambodia will not perish,” he declared, adding that the Kingdom’s resilience has been demonstrated throughout the past three months of closure.

He further pointed out that the situation has unexpectedly strengthened Cambodia’s domestic economy. With Thai imports halted, Cambodian citizens have increasingly turned to locally produced goods, boosting national industries and ensuring long-term benefits for the economy. Markets across the country remain stable, with sufficient supply and low inflation, reflecting effective economic management.

Addressing international concerns, particularly from Japan which has investments in both Cambodia and Thailand, Samdech Techo Hun Sen stressed that Cambodia has already approved the movement of goods across the border. Therefore, Japan should engage directly with Thailand regarding its request.

Finally, Samdech Techo called on the Cambodian people to remain patient and to trust in the Royal Government’s ability to resolve the issue peacefully. “We cannot end war with war. The path forward must be based on peace, stability, and national dignity,” he affirmed.
