Phnom Penh, September 2, 2025 – The Government of the People’s Republic of China has expressed strong support for the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, backing ASEAN’s ceasefire monitoring mechanism and the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) under Malaysia’s leadership.

Speaking at a press conference held at Phnom Penh International Airport early on September 2, following Prime Minister Hun Manet’s return from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, H.E. Meas Sophorn, Secretary of State of the Office of the Council of Ministers and Spokesperson of the Prime Minister, highlighted China’s reaffirmed position.

According to Sophorn, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated China’s firm support for Cambodia’s efforts to strengthen self-reliant development capacity and safeguard its national sovereignty. In addition, President Xi announced a humanitarian aid package worth 20 million yuan to assist Cambodia in repairing damages and alleviating the hardships of people affected by the armed clashes that erupted along the Cambodia-Thailand border in late July.

The announcement followed Prime Minister Hun Manet’s bilateral working meeting with President Xi Jinping on August 30, during the SCO Summit from August 30 to September 1 in Tianjin.

During the meeting, President Xi extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Cambodian government delegation, acknowledging their efforts to attend the summit despite a demanding schedule. Xi further emphasized that the Cambodian leader’s presence represented a significant milestone in reinforcing the “ironclad friendship” and deepening solidarity between China and Cambodia, building on Manet’s successful state visit to China in April.
