The Riel Introduced into Currency Exchange Listings at Melbourne International Airport
Melbourne, Australia – September 1, 2025 – The Cambodian Riel (KHR) has officially been added to the foreign currency exchange board at Travelex counters in Melbourne International Airport, marking another step forward in the currency’s international recognition.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by H.E. Ly Sideth, Deputy Governor and General Cashier of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), alongside Mr. Adam Nezval, Head of Wholesale Banknotes and Cash Operations for Australia and New Zealand at Travelex.
The collaboration between the NBC and Travelex aims to facilitate currency exchange services for travelers. Australian tourists visiting Cambodia, as well as Cambodian travelers heading to Australia, will now be able to conveniently exchange between Riel and Australian dollars. This initiative is expected to further encourage tourism flows between the two countries.
According to the NBC, the presence of the Riel on exchange boards in Australia demonstrates that the Cambodian currency is tradable on the international market, reflecting growing confidence and wider recognition of the Riel. The Bank emphasized that this achievement is the result of more than two decades of efforts to maintain the stability of the national currency.
This marks the fourth occasion on which Travelex has partnered with the NBC to list the Cambodian riel in major international financial hubs. Previous launches took place at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport in China, Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, and Changi International Airport in Singapore. The NBC stated that it will continue exploring opportunities to introduce the Riel in other global financial centers.
