Press Briefing by H.E. Pen Bona- Update on the implementation of the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand

7:00 AM, August 29, 2025
Intervention by H.E. Pen Bona, Royal Government Spokesperson
Allow me to read entirely the letters of His Excellency Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, to Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
During this one full month of implementing the ceasefire, although the situation remained fragile, many efforts have been made by Cambodia, Thailand, and other relevant parties, resulting in continuous positive outcomes that have avoided armed clashes up to the present. Activities and results achieved during the ceasefire include the meetings of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee, GBC, on August 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, which resulted in the 13-point agreed minutes under the observation of representatives from the United States of America, the People’s Republic of China, and Malaysia. Four meetings of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee, RBC, which also reached several agreements demonstrating both sides’ commitment to maintaining communication and resolving problems in order to de-escalate tensions and avoid renewed armed clashes.
In addition, both the Cambodian and Thai sides have organized multiple diplomatic visits as well as field inspection visits coordinated by the Interim Observer Team (IOT), composed of foreign military attachés based in each country, to the border areas affected by the armed clashes. Furthermore, top leaders of Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia have maintained constant communication to discuss resolved issues and aim to ease tensions and uphold the ceasefire sustainably. At the same time, the unity among Cambodians remains strong, both at home and abroad, standing together to safeguard peace, demanding the release of our 18 military personnel who are unlawfully detained by Thai forces, as well as protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity with dignity, non-violence, and great patience worthy of a people with high moral and cultural values.
Let us imagine if there had been no ceasefire and the fighting had continued to this day. How good would the tragedy have been for both nations and peoples? This question helps to appreciate the true value of the ceasefire and the value of patience shown by all parties, especially by our leaders who place the well-being of the people as their utmost priority. Therefore, placing utmost trust in the government and our leadership, which citizens both at home and abroad have been doing now, is the right thing to do, as our leadership makes decisions with the highest sense of responsibility and solemnly to protect the greatest interests of our country and our people.
Thank you.
