Landmine Incident: Cambodia Urges Thailand to Exercise Patience and Avoid Hasty Public Accusations, MFAIC’s Spokesperson

At a press briefing on “The Implementation Outcomes of the Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire Agreement” held at the Office of the Council of Ministers at 7:00 a.m. on August 10, 2025, His Excellency Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, called on Thailand to exercise patience and to refrain from making hasty public accusations against Cambodia. He stressed that such actions could undermine mutual trust and the spirit of the ceasefire at a time when constructive engagement is urgently needed.
“To date, no credible or transparent investigation has been conducted into the incident cited by the Thai side. Cambodia calls for restraint and for the avoidance of premature public accusations, which risk undermining mutual trust and eroding the spirit of the ceasefire at a time when constructive engagement is urgently needed,” H.E. Sounry stated.
“Cambodia urges Thailand to fully honor the commitments reached at the recent extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee, in particular the agreement to maintain current troop positions and refrain from movements or patrols toward the other side’s positions,” he emphasized.
This statement came in response to a recent incident in which three Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine on August 9, 2025 while conducting patrols in disregard of the joint statement issued after the General Border Committee Meeting (GBC) meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia. On the same day, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement alleged that Cambodia planted new landmines.
