Cambodia Refutes Thai Claim of Diplomatic Success in Ceasefire Agreement, Emphasizes Multilateral Efforts

Phnom Penh, August 1, 2025 – Speaking at a press conference held at the Office of the Council of Ministers, on the afternoon of Friday, August 1, 2025, His Excellency Chum Sounry, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, strongly refuted the recent claim by the spokesperson of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the ceasefire agreement was a diplomatic achievement of Thailand. He clarified that the ceasefire was in fact the result of broad multilateral efforts.
H.E. Chum Sounry stated, “As a matter of fact, the agreement was a multilateral achievement made possible by the constructive roles of ASEAN Chair Malaysia, the U.S., China and Cambodia’s active participation and restraint. It was not a Thai diplomatic victory.”
She underscored that, “The claim by Thailand that the ceasefire was a unilateral diplomatic achievement is not accurate and serves to overshadow the essential collaborative efforts by multiple stakeholders.”
This clarification was issued in response to comments made during a press briefing held by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 31, 2025, during which the Thai side claimed that the ceasefire agreement was the result of Thailand’s diplomatic efforts.
