Opinion: Cambodia Chooses Peace and Law, While Thailand Chooses Lies and Escalation Opinion: Cambodia Chooses Peace and Law, While Thailand Chooses Lies and Escalation

Khmer Times, In the midst of growing tension along the Thai-Cambodian border, one fact remains undeniable: Cambodia is the victim of Thai aggression, dishonesty, and political manipulation. While Cambodia has consistently upheld peace, respected international law, and sought lasting solutions through diplomacy, Thailand continues to choose a dangerous path — one of provocation, disinformation, and the reckless involvement of neighbors in its own internal political crisis.

A Record of Peace and Respect for Law
Cambodia has never strayed from its principles. We have chosen peace when others chose threats. We have turned to international law when others turned to unilateral actions. Whether it is in handling disputes related to border demarcation, the implementation of International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings, or ongoing regional cooperation, Cambodia has demonstrated a deep and mature commitment to diplomacy.

Even now, as Thailand attempts to provoke confrontation, Cambodia has responded with clarity, legal reasoning, and calm — not chaos. We seek no war, no escalation, and no violation of treaties. All we ask is for the truth to be acknowledged, and for our sovereignty to be respected.

Thailand’s Escalation: War Over Dialogue
Thailand, on the other hand, appears to be choosing a darker path. Their military posturing along the border, obstruction of cross-border movement, and vague threats of cutting power and essential supplies are actions of a country looking to provoke, not resolve.

Recent statements from Thai authorities claim that “all checkpoints remain open” and that “Thailand does not want to burden the people of either country.” But the situation on the ground tells another story. Cambodian citizens and local officials report delays, intimidation, and restricted movement. Power cuts have been used as political pressure tools. These are not the actions of a neighbor seeking peace — they are signs of escalation and hostility.

Worse still, the Thai government continues to mislead its own people and the international community. Their narrative paints Cambodia as a problem — when in reality, Cambodia is simply defending its rights and resisting involvement in Thailand’s domestic political theater.

Disinformation as a Weapon
One of the most alarming aspects of Thailand’s behavior is its use of disinformation. Through state-linked media, Thai officials attempt to present Cambodia as a threat or instigator. In truth, Cambodia is the one under pressure. We are the ones being falsely accused, economically squeezed, and politically targeted — all so that Bangkok can distract from its own growing crisis.

This is not just a bilateral problem — it’s a regional danger. Disinformation and manufactured hostility can destabilize borders, economies, and the trust between ASEAN neighbors. If Thailand continues to lie to the world and its own citizens, the consequences will extend far beyond just one border.

Fix Your Own Problems First
Thailand is clearly in a state of internal political turmoil. Its leadership is unstable, its institutions are under stress, and its people are demanding real change. Rather than confront these domestic challenges, some in Bangkok have chosen to shift the spotlight outward — and Cambodia is being used as a convenient target.

But Cambodia refuses to play that game.
We call on Thailand to focus on its own national reconciliation. Solve your internal political conflict. Address your governance failures. Do not drag your neighbors into your domestic unrest. Cambodia is not your political tool. We will not allow ourselves to be used to mask your failings.

Cambodia Stands as a Victim, Not an Aggressor
Let it be clearly stated: Cambodia is the victim in this situation — a victim of military posturing, economic pressure, and coordinated disinformation from a neighbor in crisis. Yet we remain strong in our commitment to peace, to international law, and to the truth.

Thailand must be held accountable for its actions — and for its words.

Peace cannot survive in the shadow of lies. Regional stability cannot be maintained when one nation chooses threats over treaties. Cambodia will continue to stand with the law. Will Thailand?
