Prime Minister Hun Manet and First Lady Pich Chanmony will embark on an official working visit to Japan later this month, following an invitation from Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru.

The visit, scheduled from May 28 to 31, will include participation in the 30th International Conference on “The Future of Asia,” hosted by Nikkei Inc. in Tokyo, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Information.

During this high-level trip, Mr Hun Manet is expected to deliver a keynote speech at the prestigious regional forum, where top political, economic, and academic leaders from the Asia-Pacific will gather to exchange views on the region’s future and its role in a world facing rising geopolitical uncertainty.

The 2025 edition of the Future of Asia conference takes place at a pivotal moment, as more than four billion people—over half the world’s population—prepare to vote in major elections, including those in the United States and several Asian countries. Amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the forum will serve as a critical platform for Asia to assert its vision and influence on global affairs.

In addition to the conference, Mr Hun Manet and Dr Chanmony will meet with members of the Cambodian community living in Japan. Cambodian nationals in Fukuoka and Nagano, including workers and students, have expressed excitement and pride in welcoming their country’s leader, with many seeing the visit as a symbol of strong ties between Cambodia and Japan.

Since the early 1990s, Japan has played a vital role in Cambodia’s peace process, post-conflict reconstruction, and socioeconomic development. This enduring relationship has been nurtured through successive governments, from the administration of former Prime Minister Hun Sen to the current leadership of Mr Hun Manet. The Cambodian government continues to recognise and deeply value Japan’s contributions, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, education, and peacebuilding. Moreover, Mr Hun Manet has expressed strong satisfaction with the deepening Cambodia–Japan cooperation across multiple sectors, especially security collaboration.
