Courtesy Meeting and Discussion with UNESCO Cambodia on the AI Competency Framework in Education .
This morning, at the Ministry’s headquarters, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, and Sport, held a courtesy meeting and work discussion with UNESCO Cambodia, led by H.E. Sardar Umar Alam. The discussion focused on the AI Competency Framework in education, with the participation of senior ministry officials and relevant stakeholders.
During the meeting, H.E. Sardar Umar Alam congratulated the Ministry on the successful organization of Cambodia’s first EdTech Summit and Exhibition. He also expressed UNESCO’s continued interest in collaborating with the Ministry to promote technological advancements and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the education sector. He highlighted UNESCO’s potential role in supporting education in this area to ensure that 21st-century teachers and students acquire comprehensive digital skills, especially in utilizing AI ethically and effectively to enhance learning outcomes in the digital era.
In response, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron commended and thanked UNESCO for its support in organizing the first EdTech Summit in Cambodia. He highly valued UNESCO’s vision of strengthening collaboration with the Ministry in integrating technology and AI in teaching and learning to improve education quality. He also outlined the Ministry’s vision of leveraging AI for education, including training teachers using AI to support early numeracy and literacy, fostering students’ critical thinking and creativity, enhancing digital literacy, developing educational content, and expanding the implementation of STEM education.
Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister encouraged UNESCO to support and strengthen key areas in education, such as developing and preparing a digital library, utilizing technology to enhance PISA assessments, and conducting regional studies. He emphasized the need to establish a clear framework for using AI to support teacher training in Cambodia. He also noted that for AI and education to be effectively developed, newly trained teachers must possess strong digital competencies, including the ability to create engaging and high-quality learning content within a short timeframe.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron expressed gratitude to UNESCO for its past support in the education sector, particularly in integrating AI into education to align with the digital era. He also emphasized the importance of adopting AI in learning and teaching, especially in curricula and various specialized fields. He remarked that AI will bring significant changes to the world, particularly in education, and that the sector must be well-prepared for this major transformation.
