Samdech Techo Hun Sen Credits U.S. President Donald Trump’s Role in Securing Ceasefire, Urges Continued Attention to Cambodia–Thailand Border Situation

Phnom Penh, September 5, 2025 — Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State and President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, underlined that the ceasefire reached between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28 would not have been possible without the timely initiative and engagement of H.E. Donald Trump, President of the United States.
The statement was made during a courtesy and working meeting on Friday morning at the Senate Palace with Mrs. Bridgette L. Walker, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy to Cambodia. According to Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thearith, Samdech Techo briefed the U.S. side on the recent developments concerning the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict.
Samdech Techo expressed deep gratitude for the swift measures taken by the Trump Administration and the U.S. Secretary of State, highlighting their close attention and active involvement in helping to de-escalate tensions at the border. He stressed that U.S. efforts had directly contributed to preventing further loss of life among both soldiers and civilians, which might otherwise have resulted from renewed armed clashes.
At the same time, Samdech Techo voiced concern over the latest situation, particularly Thailand’s continued placement of barbed wire along the border, urging the United States to monitor and follow the developments closely to ensure the full respect and implementation of the ceasefire.
He reiterated Cambodia’s patience and strict adherence to the ceasefire commitments, affirming the nation’s position that the Cambodia–Thailand border should return to normalcy. Samdech Techo further underlined that Cambodia has designated specific observers to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
