Speaking during a press briefing on “The Outcome of the Ceasefire Implementation Between Cambodia and Thailand” at the Office of the Council of Ministers at 4:00 p.m. on August 9, 2025, Her Excellency Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, stated that as of 4:00 p.m. today, the 18 Cambodian soldiers detained by Thailand have been in custody for 11 days hours — having been apprehended only 7 hours and 50 minutes after the ceasefire officially took effect.

She expressed hope that the Thai side will promptly release those 18 Cambodian soldiers and reaffirmed Cambodia’s determination to persist in its demands until they are freed.

“Since July 29, 2025, at 7:50 a.m., immediately after the ceasefire came into force, our forces were unlawfully detained by Thai soldiers. As of now, this amounts to 11 days, 8 hours, and 10 minutes — as of 4:00 p.m. on August 9, 2025. Cambodia urges the Thai side to immediately return all 18 of our personnel without delay, in accordance with international humanitarian law and in line with the strong appeals of numerous partner countries and international institutions. The Ministry of National Defence and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, together with the international community, will continue to press until Thailand fulfills its obligations under international law. We will never abandon or leave any member of our national family isolated or alone,” H.E. Socheata said.
