Cambodia and Thailand Reaffirm Ceasefire Commitment in High-Level Meeting Hosted by Malaysia
Putrajaya, August 7, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic development, Malaysia hosted a high-level trilateral meeting this morning at Perdana Putra, bringing together General Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Cambodia, and General Nattaphon Narkphanit, Acting Minister of Defence of Thailand, along with their respective delegations.
The meeting, described by Malaysian officials as “meaningful and constructive,” resulted in a key consensus to sustain dialogue and uphold the ceasefire agreement along the Thailand–Cambodia border, which has been in effect since July 28, 2025. Malaysian leadership reaffirmed its continued commitment to facilitating the peace process, with a special role played by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar.
During the talks, both Cambodia and Thailand agreed to several critical measures, including:
– Full adherence to the ceasefire, with no acts of aggression;
– No increase or repositioning of troops in the border area;
– Avoidance of any provocative actions that could jeopardize peace;
– A firm commitment to safeguard civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Another major point of discussion was the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). The proposed team would support ceasefire monitoring, provide humanitarian assistance, and facilitate medical coordination at the border. Malaysia pledged its full support for this initiative, reinforcing the view that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine friendship.
This meeting marks a vital step forward in regional peace efforts and underscores Malaysia’s central role in promoting diplomatic solutions within ASEAN.
