Cambodia Urges International Community to Assess Border Conflict with Historical Perspective and Diplomatic Context

Phnom Penh, July 27, 2025 — The Royal Government of Cambodia has called upon the international community to take a balanced and historically informed view of the ongoing border conflict with Thailand, urging global institutions to recognize Cambodia’s consistent commitment to peaceful diplomacy.

Speaking during a press conference at the Peace Palace on Sunday morning, His Excellency Chum Sounry, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, appealed to the international community, particularly the United Nations and ASEAN, to assess the current Cambodia–Thailand border situation with discernment, taking into account Thailand’s historical acts of aggression and Cambodia’s long-standing reliance on diplomatic mechanisms for conflict resolution.

“Cambodia respectfully calls on the international community, including the United Nations and ASEAN, to evaluate the present tensions through a lens of fairness—considering Thailand’s repeated incursions over time and Cambodia’s enduring efforts to resolve disputes through diplomatic means.”, he stated.

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to national sovereignty, peace, and regional stability, while urging Thailand to act with greater responsibility in order to de-escalate tensions.

“Cambodia remains resolutely dedicated to defending its lawful sovereignty, promoting peace, and preserving regional stability. We urge the Thai side to act with accountability to prevent further deterioration of the situation,” he added.

Also present at the press conference, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, reported that as of 6:00 AM today, Thai troops continued to carry out intensified and aggressive incursions into Cambodian territory. These violations, she noted, show blatant disregard for the urgent ceasefire appeal issued by U.S. President Donald Trump during a late-night conversation leading into Sunday, July 27.

This marks the fourth consecutive day of Thai military violations against Cambodia’s internationally recognized sovereignty, following a Thai offensive launched at 8:46 AM on Thursday, July 24, 2025, targeting Cambodian forces stationed at Tamon Thom Temple. In response, Cambodia exercised its legal right to self-defense.

Cambodia once again calls for international scrutiny, diplomatic support, and immediate restraint to prevent further escalation in the region.
