Breaking News: Cambodia and Thailand Agree to Ceasefire Following Mediation by U.S. President Donald Trump

Phnom Penh, July 26, 2025 — In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following direct intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump, amid escalating armed clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
In a late-night phone call on Saturday, July 26, Cambodian leadership held discussions with President Trump, who expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence. The U.S. President emphasized his commitment to preventing further bloodshed, stating his desire to avoid war and unnecessary casualties among both soldiers and civilians.
President Trump, known for his past efforts to mediate international disputes, reiterated his long-standing position as a peace broker. He urged both Cambodia and Thailand to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Cambodian authorities responded positively, reaffirming their readiness to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The Cambodian side confirmed this stance had already been conveyed to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim—who currently holds the rotating ASEAN chair—during a conversation on July 24.
According to the Cambodian statement, President Trump also contacted acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and later relayed encouraging news: Thailand has agreed to the ceasefire proposal.
“This is welcome news for the soldiers and civilians on both sides of the border,” the Cambodian side stated, while urging Thailand not to backtrack, as it allegedly did during Prime Minister Anwar’s earlier mediation attempt.
To ensure swift implementation of the ceasefire, Cambodia has tasked Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn with coordinating efforts with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and engaging with the Thai Foreign Ministry.
The Cambodian leadership expressed gratitude to President Trump for his timely initiative and decisive role in bringing both nations to the negotiating table. “This excellent outcome will help protect the lives of countless civilians and soldiers, and allow hundreds of thousands of refugees to return home in safety,” the statement concluded.
This development marks a significant step toward de-escalation and regional stability, with hopes now pinned on both sides honoring their commitments and avoiding further conflict.
