Cambodia–Thailand Border Dispute: France Willing to Provide Documentation If Necessary

French President H.E. Emmanuel Macron has expressed France’s readiness to support the resolution of the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute by providing relevant documentation to both parties, if necessary.

The statement was conveyed by H.E. Jean-François Tan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister, during a press conference at Phnom Penh International Airport this morning, following the return of a high-level Cambodian delegation, led by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, from the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held in Nice, France.

According to H.E. Jean-François Tan, the Prime Minister raised the border issue with the French President solely to clarify Cambodia’s position, without any additional political motives.

He reiterated Cambodia’s stance on the matter, which includes: 1. Maintaining peace, friendship, and cooperation with Thailand; 2. Referring the cases of the Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Tauch, Ta Krabey temple complexes, and the Mom Bei area to the International Court of Justice (ICJ); 3. Continuing cooperation with Thailand on demarcating and placing border markers in the remaining areas, excluding the four disputed sites, through existing mechanisms such as the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC); and 4. Strengthening Cambodia–Thailand relations through all established channels in the mutual interest of both nations and peoples.

The Cambodia-Thailand border tension intensified when Thai military forces opened fire on a Cambodian army post located in Techo Morokot village, Morokot commune, Choam Khsan district, Preah Vihear province—an area long recognised as a Cambodian military position on the morning of May 28, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Tragically, the exchange resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
