A contingent of 98 Cambodian peacekeepers specialising in unexploded ordnance (UXO) disposal has successfully returned home after completing a year-long United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The official homecoming ceremony took place at Phnom Penh International Airport, presided over by Lieutenant General Sem Ratana, First Vice President of the National Committee and Acting Director-General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces.

He extended warm congratulations on behalf of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Tea Seiha, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn.

During the mission, the Cambodian peacekeepers carried out critical tasks assigned by the UN command in CAR, including the clearance and disposal of unexploded ordnance, mine clearance operations, and various humanitarian activities. The unit also played a vital role in infrastructure development by repairing and constructing bridges, as well as distributing educational supplies to local students.

Lieutenant General Ratana commended the returning troops for their professionalism and dedication, emphasising that their contributions not only ensured the safety of local communities in the conflict-affected region but also enhanced Cambodia’s reputation on the international stage. He further noted that the successful completion of their mission exemplified the nation’s commitment to global peace and security.

Cambodia has been actively participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions since 2006, with personnel deployed in several countries, including South Sudan, Mali, and Lebanon. The latest deployment continues to showcase Cambodia’s strong engagement in international humanitarian and security efforts.

The returning troops will now undergo post-mission assessments and reintegration programs before resuming their national duties.
