Number of Registered Vehicles Increases
Public Works Minister Sun Chanthol yesterday said that there are currently a total of 920,000 cars and 5.2 million motorcycles registered throughout the country.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of National Road 11 yesterday, Chanthol said that since 1998, the number of cars has increased from 65,000 to 920,000 and the number of motorcycles increased from 200,000 to 5.2 million.
He said that this growth is due to the peace that has allowed the government and Cambodians to restore and rebuild the nation and step firmly on development and growth in all sectors.
Ministry spokesman Pal Chandara said yesterday that the number of vehicles has been increasing every year due to people’s livelihood improving enough to buy them.
He said that is why the ministry developed the strategy and vision to build roads throughout the country.
“The ministry has made efforts to expand roads, build roads and add road lanes to respond to the increasing number of vehicles,” he said.
According to a 2020 Public Works Ministry report, the number of newly registered vehicles last year was a total of 640,183 consisting of 15,956 heavy vehicles, 92,958 cars and 531,269 motorbikes.
The ministry said that from 1990 until now, there have been more than 5 million motorcycles registered in the Kingdom. It has increased by more than 300,000 to 400,000 vehicles each year.
Meanwhile, Chanthol said National Road 11 which connects Prey Veng and Tboung Khmum provinces could facilitate traffic, transport, passengers, tourism and agriculture being more efficient and faster. The construction of this road is not only to facilitate traffic but also to help prevent and reduce floods in the future.
“This new achievement is a priced value of the Royal Government of Cambodia to the people of Prey Veng and Tboung Khmum province and the residents across the country to use general and long-term use,” he said.
National Road 11 is 100 kilometres and cost over $100 million. It was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday.
Mr. Hun Sen lauded the achievement of finishing the road construction in 14 months for the official use of the residents.
He said that National Road 11 directly serves the province and connects to other provinces, including Asean’s Highway Connectivity.
