The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) swept all the seats during the Bokor City Council Election yesterday.

Kampot provincial governor Cheav Tay said yesterday that the election process was run smoothly and without incident.

He said four political parties participated in the election: CPP, Cambodian Nationality Party, Funcinpec Party and Cambodian Youth Party.

“Each party nominated 17 candidates for the council election. The Cambodian People’s Party led by Samdech Hun Sen won all [13 council seats]. It was a free and fair election,” he said.

Bokor City was created following a sub-decree signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on March 16. The sub-decree mentioned that the city will have three communes: Boeng Touk, Koh Touch and Prek Tnort. The three communes were split from Kampot province’s Toek Chhou district.

The sub-decree added that the organisation and functioning of the city council must be determined by the “Law on Administrative Management of Municipal, Provincial, City and District.” Whereas the composition of the council must also be determined by the same law.

Regarding the election result, Aing Sambo, secretary general of the Funcinpec Party said that the polls result was acceptable.

“In all, I don’t have many things to say. I admit that the election was free and fair. That is all I can say,” he added.

Pich Sros, president of the Cambodian Youth Party, said that his party decided to participate in the election in order to make people aware of his party.

“The fact that we decided to participate in the election is because we want to let the Cambodian people know that our party is ready and strong enough for any election,” he said.

Sros noted that it was no surprise that CPP won all seats, because, according to the “Law on Administrative Management of Municipal, Provincial, City and District” only commune council members have the right to vote for Bokor City council seats and all commune chiefs are from the CPP.
