More than 500 families in Stung Treng province are getting a piped water system, Plan International Cambodia announced yesterday.

Plan International Cambodia and Wathnakpheap organisation gave support for the construction of a community piped water system that is 90 percent complete and will provide clean water to five villages in Borey O’Svay Senchey district’s Preah Romkil commune.

District governor Ly Mina said that this is the second community piped water system in his district. Through this new water system, he strongly hopes that the rural community members will have improved access to clean water.

Hang Hybunna, water, sanitation and hygiene specialist of Plan International Cambodia, said yesterday that the piped water system is only a small part of its 1,000-day programme which also includes addressing food security and increasing resilience to improve maternal and infant health in 51 villages in 17 communes of three districts in the province.

“The main objective of the project is to reduce hunger and malnutrition among infants and women of reproductive age by applying integrated approaches to ensure food security in target areas,” Hybunna said.

He said that one focus is to increase home-based production of nutritious food for families with young children under five years through adapted farming and processing methods.

The project aims to improve water, hygiene and sanitation infrastructure and practices for vulnerable and marginalised households in the target communities and train provincial and district health authorities to independently continue the high-quality projects, he said.

It also lobbies the government to improve state services.

The cost for the newly constructed piped water system is around $100,000 and Plan International started the construction in early January.

He said that the project is also funded by BMZ-Plan Germany with around $2.5 million over five years from 2019-2024. Khmer Times
