Prime Minister Hun Sen has expressed thanks to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its continued support to the Kingdom’s efforts in curbing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am pleased and encouraged to receive your letter dated April 9, 2021, conveying the WHO’s renewed commitment to support Cambodia’s sustained efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic,” wrote yesterday PM Hun Sen in his message to Dr. Takeshi Kasai, WHO Regional Director.

“While Cambodia was spared from the COVID-19 outbreak last year, we were not so lucky this year as we are now facing an enormous challenge from the community transmission of the new imported strain, which unfortunately has claimed an increasing number of lives,” he continued.

In the face of the current grave public health emergency, he added, the Royal Government of Cambodia is compelled to take difficult decisions to lock down affected areas and impose stringent travel restrictions and other measures to stop the spread of the outbreak. These measures are necessary to ensure life-saving and the well-being of our people, public health safety, and an early return to normalcy.

“Cambodia is a strong advocate of multilateralism and we do appreciate the leading role of the WHO in tackling the current global pandemic. We are truly grateful for the valuable assistance provided by your organisation to our country during this difficult time of crisis,” underlined the Cambodian Premier.
