Cambodia to Hold Commune/Sangkat Council Election in Early June 2022
The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has announced the specific date for the Commune/Sangkat Council Election of the 5th mandate.
According to the RGC’s resolution signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on Mar. 1, the 5th Commune/Sangkat Council Election will take place on Sunday June 5, 2022.
The Office of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Economy and Finance, and Ministry of Civil Service and other relevant ministries and institutions are ordered to carry out the resolution effectively.
The previous Commune/Sangkat Council Election was held on June 4, 2017 in 22,148 polling stations across the country with the participation of 12 political parties. Some 7.04 million or 89.52 percent of the total eligible voters of 7,865,033 turned out to the polls.
According to the result, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won a landslide victory by obtaining 1,156 communes/Sangkat, while the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) got 489 communes/Sangkat, and Khmer National United Party (KNUP), a commune.
Some 7.8 million of 9.6 million eligible Cambodians were registered to cast their ballots. 94,595 candidates from 12 political parties contested the 11,572 commune council seats in 1,646 communes of Cambodia
In 2012, a total of nine political parties had contested the commune elections which had a 9,203,493 registered votes with 5,993,992 of them casting their ballots.
However in 22, a lot more political parties are expected to enter the fray with a host of political parties being established in recent weeks and months.
